Courthouse Center's Almonte shares her passion
Did you know the Courthouse Center for the Arts in West Kingston puts on free children's theater and music classes and camps? They even have inclusion camps for special needs kids. The Courthouse Chimes Chorus performs at nursing homes and assisted living facilities, as well as at events all around the county; open rehearsal is every Saturday morning. Courthouse Arthur Murray Dance Classes are every Wednesday evening. Drum lessons are available. All this in addition to theatrical performances, concerts with local and national talents and ongoing art gallery shows.
Thank you to executive director Mariann Almonte for sharing her passion with us at our meeting Tuesday night.
The nonprofit is located in the 19th century former Kingston Courthouse, a large, granite-block building just west of the University of Rhode Island, which the organization purchased from the state for $1and the promise that it will remain a community arts center in perpetuity. The first floor holds rooms for events, classes and art showings, while the second floor performance space has variable seating to allow for traditional theater seating, theater-in-the-round, cafe seating or whatever the event calls for.

Club Notes

Club Notes
  • Jeff has been passing around a sign-up sheet for those planning to work the pasta dinner on Nov. 13; if you have not signed up, please contact Jeff about an assignment. He also continues to have tickets for sale if you need more.
  • The Gala Committee has begun holding planning meetings, and have settled on a circus-themed event in the spring. If you want to get involved, contact Liz.
  • Susie has developed a form to use to collect attendance and meal preferences each week. It seems to be working really well after a couple of weeks, though she has made a couple of tweaks. As Sheri said, "Why didn't we get these genius school teachers in the club sooner?"
  • As part of our effort to improve attendance, a sign-in sheet has been developed. Please remember to check off your name when you come in, whether you are paying Rick for dinner or not. The object is to track members who are missing multiple meetings so we can reach out to see if there's a problem.
  • Ed is doing a great job with the speaker schedule, and is making sure to keep the website updated with who will be speaking at coming meetings, so be sure and check out the home page each week. Also, don't be surprised if he taps you on the shoulder to give your classification talk -we have not done any in a long time and it's a great way for us all to get to know each other better.
  • The "Nuts & Bolts of Rotary" training assembly is coming up on Nov. 10. Designed for any member who wants to know how Rotary really works, sessions will include Rotary Foundation, Membership, Public Image, Using Club Central and running New Generations programs. The assembly will be held at Whites of Westport from 8 am - 2:30 pm; a Continental breakfast and box lunch will be served, and the Club will pay for member registrations. Contact Dave ASAP if you want to attend.

Our next Board meeting is Nov. 4 at 5:30 pm

Fake email and social media accounts target Rotary members in new scam

Rotary recently learned that scammers have created multiple email and social media accounts that impersonate RI President Barry Rassin, RI President-elect Mark Maloney, and General Secretary John Hewko. The social media accounts have been on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Some of these messages also reference Viber, another messaging platform.

These are not authentic Rotary communications. They are phishing and spoofing attempts to obtain money and personal information.

Rotary monitors for and responds to these attempts as part of an ongoing effort to keep member, program participant, and staff data safe. We also work with LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp to remove imposter accounts.

Neither President Rassin’s, President-elect Maloney's, nor General Secretary Hewko’s authentic accounts have been compromised.

Rotary members should continue to exercise caution:

  • Disregard any suspicious message that offers money, requests money, or asks for your personal information.
  • Avoid opening attachments or following links in suspicious messages.
  • Pay close attention to the details of the email address and signature block to verify the sender.

If you receive what you believe to be a suspicious message from the president, general secretary, or another Rotary leader, please forward it to Rotary’s chief information officer at and then delete it immediately. Please also report any suspicious social media accounts to .
